Desert Day Dreaming

Drifting on waves of sand,
the sand is everywhere.

Golden, shifting mountains of sand,
eastward, westward,
anywhere the wind blows...
everywhere...
the sand stretches on towards infinity in all directions.

The fine particles dance into the air as the winds rush by.
What am I? The wind? The sand?
No, I am something between the wind and the sand...

The sky is a brilliant blue.
No clouds at all.
Only the sun
and blue,
blue
sky...

or is it water,
a beautiful sapphire sea,
that I am falling towards?
I spin
float
fall
with a slight dizziness...

Daisies - I see yellow and white daisies
floating on the surface of the ocean

until my attention is re-taken by the sand
and gravity awakens below me,
pulling me out of the sky so blue...

Heat radiates up, down, over, around,
through me.
Does it come from the sun or the sand?
Am I the heat?

Everything is bright,
the sun,
the sky,
and the sand,
it all merges into one big radiance.
I close my eyes now and again
to avoid being blinded by the dazzle.
Eyes?
The wind has no eyes.
The sand has no eyes.
I need no eyes -
some strange memory is speaking to me.

I waver with slight confusion
and then remember my eyes.
They are on my face.
The wind blows against my face
and I remember.

I have been travelling,
climbing up these mountains of sand,
walking along the high ridges,
and stumbling down into the valleys
where some shadows, at least,
manage to hide from the sun and the light.
I seem to go nowhere.
It is always the same brilliance
of blue sky and yellow sand around me.

The sun does not move.
It is always above me.
It has always been there.
I have been walking forever, it seems.
I remember nothing else.

Finally I have stopped
by the top of a high sand dune.
The sand pulls me towards it,
til I no longer stand,
but am kneeling in it.
I lay backwards,
my head falling against the warm pillow of sand.
I cover my eyes with my arm,
for even with my eyes closed,
the sun is painfully bright upon my face.

I feel the sand beneath me,
the winds, more gentle now, passing over me,
the sun, still overhead, shining down on me,
and now, the blood pulsing within me.
I drift into unconsciousness.

I need no eyes.
I can see everything.

The sun shines overhead.
